I compiled the list of Hardys while I was recovering from a debilitating slipped disc (my second!) in early 1992, within the context of a lifelong interest in hill walking and high points, as well as a geographical academical background.
My starting points were the UK hill ranges, "major" islands and the 1974 county reorganisation baseline - my "core" High Points (although you could if you wished go successively backwards (or sideways) from this for the whole of recorded history!). A more rigorous extension of the concept followed useful and positive comments from Alan Dawson (the Marilyns) amongst others. The second edition of the Book followed the extensive mid-nineties local authority re-structuring (nb. still continuing!), and led to recognition by the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA), and several "honourable mentions" in the walking-related media through the years since, in particular "Country Walking" (for which thanks!). The third edition followed my retirement in August 2008, and incorporates further local authority changes as well as the inevitable accumulation of minor amendments, clarifications and errors! It also includes Hardy location maps, several Annexes, and the categorisation of Hardys by "country" within the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland), and by inclusion in my "core" list. The meaning behind the logo shape is fairly obvious I hope, and the colours represent summits (grey), hills (green), islands (blue) and administrative areas (red). The strap line is fairly obvious too!
